How to Prepare Product Photos for Marketplaces

By Jayson Kim·2026-03-18·8 min read
Marketplace images need clean backgrounds, consistent dimensions and small files that still look trustworthy.
Product photos do more than show the item. They communicate trust. A sharp photo with a clean background makes a small shop feel organized; a dark, oversized, inconsistent image does the opposite. Most marketplaces also have technical limits: minimum dimensions, maximum file size, preferred background color and rules about text or watermarks.
You do not need an expensive studio workflow for every listing. You need a repeatable process: choose the best source photo, clean the background if needed, resize to the marketplace target, compress carefully and check the final listing preview.

Create a clean base image

Start with the sharpest original photo. Avoid editing screenshots of photos from chat apps because they are already compressed. If the product is on a busy background, remove the background and export a transparent PNG. Then place it on white or the marketplace's required background color.
Keep shadows natural when possible. A completely floating object can look fake, but a cluttered table looks unprofessional. The best product images usually have a simple background, consistent lighting and enough margin around the item for automatic cropping.

Resize and compress for upload

Many marketplaces recommend square images because grids and thumbnails crop consistently. A 1600 x 1600 or 2000 x 2000 JPG is often a good master listing size, but always check the platform's current rules. For thumbnails or secondary images, smaller dimensions may be enough.
Export product photos as JPG unless you need transparency. Use PNG for logos, labels with sharp text or cutouts that will be composited later. Compress gently: too much compression creates blocky edges around products and makes fabric, jewelry or packaging details look cheap.
