Where to download Windows software safely
PCToolsOnline.com does not host EXE or MSI files. This page is a short map of stores and indexes that have a long public track record. Prefer the official publisher. If you need a Mac guide, use Where to download Mac software.
Do not click the first “Download” ad in a search result. Those ads often lead to look-alike sites. We also do not list cracked, “repack,” or “free full game” portals.
Rule of thumb
- Search for the product name plus the company (for example “7-Zip official”).
- Open the publisher site or the Microsoft Store listing.
- Check that the address matches the company you expect before you run a file.
- On Windows 10/11, SmartScreen and an up-to-date browser already block many junk installers. They are not a substitute for a trusted source.

Microsoft Store
The Store is built into Windows 10 and 11. Listings are reviewed by Microsoft, which does not make every app perfect, but it removes most “next-next-next” bundles. The Store website and the app itself switch language with the PC.
Use this for utilities you do not need to pin to a specific vendor installer: calculators, unofficial-looking “cleaner” tools should still be treated with suspicion even inside the Store. For browsers and major suites, the vendor site or Store listing that the vendor itself advertises is enough.
Official vendor sites
This is still the default for well-known desktop software. Type the company name. Confirm the domain (mozilla.org, videolan.org, 7-zip.org, google.com/chrome). Download only from that domain or from a store badge on that domain.
Vendor sites are not all multilingual. Many product pages default to English and add two or three languages. That does not make the installer unsafe; it just means the download page may be in English while the app later offers your language.
Ninite
Ninite builds one installer from a checklist (browser, 7-Zip, VLC, and similar). It pulls packages from the publishers and skips extra toolbars. The website is English-only. The programs it installs generally use the language already set in Windows, when the publisher ships that language.
Ninite is for common free apps, not for games, Adobe, or niche drivers. It is a helper after a clean Windows install, not a replacement for the Store or the vendor.
PortableApps and FossHub
PortableApps packages programs that run from a folder or a USB drive. The catalog site is English, with volunteer translations for parts of the platform. FossHub focuses on open-source Windows downloads and is also an English site. Both are more trustworthy than anonymous “software parks,” and both are still third parties — prefer the vendor when you only need one app.
GitHub Releases
Fine when you already know the project (for example a known open-source utility). Stay on github.com/the-real-org/the-real-repo and use the Releases file the project tagged. GitHub’s interface is English. Random GitHub pages that only exist to host an EXE are not the same thing.
What we do not recommend as a first stop
- Search ads that only say “Download.”
- Old consumer portals that historically bundled extra software.
- Sites that promise paid software or PC games for free.
- Anything labeled crack, patch, “repack,” or “full version free.”
Those pages are how malware and unwanted toolbars still spread. Linking them from a tools site is also a problem for ad networks.
Games on Windows
Use the store that actually sells the game: Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox / Microsoft Store, or the studio’s own launcher. Do not use a “PC game download” index. Those catalogs are a different business from utilities and are often unsafe.

The tools on this site run in the browser. They do not replace desktop installers. This guide exists because people ask where to get a real Windows program after using a browser tool. We do not host binaries and we cannot certify that a third-party site stays clean forever. If a name on this page changes hands or fills with ads, treat it as stale and go back to the vendor.

Why split Windows and Mac?
The safe default is different. Windows users bounce between Store, vendor EXE, and helpers like Ninite. Mac users should start in the App Store. Mixing both into one list makes the wrong first click too easy.
The Ninite site is only in English. Can I still use it?
Yes, if you can read the checklist. The installer language of each app is separate from Ninite’s website language.
