Crop PDF

This changes the visible page size. Words and images outside the crop stay inside the file, but normal PDF viewers will not show them. Password-protected PDFs are refused. Limit: 40 pages.

Choose a PDF. The shaded band is what will be cut off.

Cut the same margin, in millimetres, from one page or every page. Open the download and check the edges before you send it.

How to use

  1. Drop the PDF. The first page is drawn with a shaded band around the edge. That band is the part viewers will hide.
  2. Set top, right, bottom, and left in millimetres. Change the page menu if the file mixes portrait and landscape. Tick All pages when every sheet should use the same margins.
  3. Crop, then download. Pages after 40 are left as they were, and the status line says so.

What crop changes, and what it leaves behind

A PDF page has a box that tells the viewer how much of the drawing to show. This tool shrinks that box. It does not rewrite the page into a picture, so text that was selectable stays selectable inside the new edge. Compress PDF does the opposite: it redraws every page as a JPEG and the words stop being text.

The shaded preview follows the page as you see it, including pages stored sideways. The same millimetre margins are applied to each chosen page. A 12 mm trim on a letter page and a 12 mm trim on an A4 page are the same physical inset, not the same percentage. A US Letter page is 216 × 279 mm. Twelve millimetres off every side leaves about 192 × 255 mm. An A4 page is 210 × 297 mm, and the same trim leaves about 186 × 273 mm.

Anything outside the new box is still stored. A normal reader such as Chrome, Edge, Preview, or Acrobat will not paint it. A tool that ignores the page box, or someone who resets the box, can still reach that strip. If the margin contains a name, an account number, or a signature you need gone, use Redact PDF as a visual cover and then read the warning on that page: a black box is not the same as deleting the text underneath. For a scan whose only problem is a dirty border, crop is the right first step.

Do not use crop when you meant to drop whole pages. Organize PDF reorders, rotates, and deletes pages. Split PDF pulls out a range. Crop never removes a page, and it will refuse margins that leave less than about a quarter inch of page.

After the download, the new page size is what later tools see. You can merge the cropped file with another PDF, add page numbers, or place a watermark. Do those steps after cropping if the numbers should sit on the new edge rather than the old one.

Password-protected files are not opened. This page does not remove passwords. Protect PDF is the tool that adds an open password, and it cannot unlock a file you do not already know the password for.

When the same margin is the wrong tool

Phone scans often tilt, and the unwanted edge is wider on one side of page 3 than on page 1. One set of millimetre values cannot follow that. Crop page by page, with All pages unticked, or crop the scan in an image editor before you build the PDF with JPG to PDF.

Headers and footers that you still want must sit inside the kept area. If a 15 mm footer is part of the document, do not set the bottom margin to 15 mm. The preview is there so you can see the collision before you download.

Very large files with many images can sit in memory while the new file is built. Forty pages is the cap so a browser tab does not stall. Split a longer file first, crop each part, then merge.

Questions

Does the cut-off text get deleted?

No. The page box shrinks so viewers hide that strip. The drawing commands for the hidden strip can still be inside the file.

Will text stay selectable?

Yes, inside the new page. This is not a JPEG rewrite.

Can I crop one page differently?

Yes. Untick All pages, pick the page, set the margins, and crop. Repeat for the next page on a fresh copy if you need several different trims, because each download applies one margin set.

Why millimetres, not a free rectangle?

A free rectangle is easy to mis-draw on a small preview. A measured inset is the usual need for a scanned border or a printer margin. If you need an odd window, say so and that can be a later control.
