Images to GIF

GIF holds 256 colors. Photos will band. Dithering hides some of that and adds speckle. This is for a short, small animation, not a video.

Add at least two images. 20 is the maximum.

Stack still photos into one looping GIF. Reorder the frames, set how long each one stays, and pick a size that will actually play on a page. Encoding happens in this tab.

What kind of GIF you get

Each still photo becomes one frame. The delay is how long that frame stays, in milliseconds. 100 ms is about 10 frames a second. Browsers quietly slow delays under about 20 ms, so a value of 10 will not play as fast as the number suggests. A per-frame delay overrides the global one. Leave it blank to use the global value.

GIF holds 256 colors in a frame, not 256 per channel. A photo of a sky or a face will show steps unless dithering is on, and dithering looks grainy. Each frame picks its own palette, so a color can flicker between frames. That is a limit of this format, not a bug in the order of your files. Width is the control that keeps the file usable. An 800 pixel frame of a photo is often several hundred kilobytes, and twenty of them add up. Drop the width toward 480 if the download is heavy.

Fit inside keeps the whole photo and pads the gaps. Fill and crop cuts the edges. Stretch ignores the original shape. Transparency in the gaps is on or off, not a soft fade, and it only applies with Fit inside. A GIF you drop here is read as its first frame only. Use Split GIF if you need every frame of an animation you already have. Words on top of a GIF you already have belong in Text on GIF.

How to use

  1. Add 2 to 20 images. Up and Down change the order. A per-frame delay overrides the global delay. Leave it blank to use the global value. 100 ms is 10 frames a second. Browsers treat delays under about 20 ms as slower than you asked.
  2. Width is the output width. Match first image keeps that photo's shape. Square, 16:9, and 4:5 crop or pad the others to fit.
  3. Fit inside leaves a background border. Fill and crop cuts the edges. Stretch ignores the original shape. Transparent gaps only apply when Fit inside is on. GIF transparency is on or off, not a soft fade.
  4. Build GIF. A width of 800 and 20 photos can take a few seconds. The preview under the button is the file you downloaded.

Limits

256 colors per frame, not 256 per channel. A sunset will show steps unless dithering is on, and dithering looks grainy. There is no audio and no video input. If a still is the wrong shape, crop it or run Image Resizer before you add it. A dark frame can be lifted in Adjust Image first. Each frame is quantized on its own, so a color can flicker between frames. Keep the width at 480 or below if the file gets large.

Questions

Why is the GIF larger than the JPGs?

GIF compression is weak on photos. Twenty frames of an 800 pixel photo can be several megabytes. Lower the width or use fewer frames.

Can I start from an existing GIF?

A GIF dropped here is read as its first frame only. Use Text on GIF or Split GIF for an animation you already have.

The animation flickers.

Each frame is reduced to 256 colors on its own. A blue sky can pick a slightly different blue on the next frame. Dithering hides the steps and adds grain. Fewer frames and a lower width make the flicker less obvious because there is less to compare.

Why does a 10 ms delay look slow?

Browsers treat very short GIF delays as a slower default, often around 100 ms. Set 100 if that is the speed you want, and do not rely on values under 20.

Are the images uploaded?

No.
