Blur & Mosaic

You choose the area. This does not detect faces or plates by itself. Paint what should be hidden, or tick "Apply outside the paint" to keep a subject and blur the rest.

Open a photo, then paint the part you want to hide.

Cover a face, a name, a plate, or a document number with blur, a mosaic, or a flat block. You paint the area. The photo never leaves this tab.

What a cover does and does not do

You paint the area. Blur softens it, mosaic breaks it into blocks, and a solid color hides it completely. The download contains only the covered pixels. It does not keep a hidden original underneath. That is also the limit: anyone who still has the first file still has the uncovered photo. This page does not delete the original from your computer.

A light blur on large type can still be read. For an ID number, a plate, or an account line, use a coarse mosaic or a solid block, and make the area larger than the text. Faces at a distance can use blur. Faces that fill the frame should use mosaic or a block if the picture will be published.

There is no face finder. Automatic detection misses profiles and sometimes marks the wrong shape. Painting is slower and you can see exactly what will be hidden. Apply outside the paint when the thing you want to keep is small, such as a product, and the rest of the frame should drop away. The working copy is capped at a 2,000 pixel long side so the brush stays usable. That capped size is the download.

How to use

  1. Open the photo. Large files are scaled so the long side is 2,000 pixels. That is the size you download.
  2. Brush paints a circle. Rectangle and ellipse mark a region when you release. Eraser removes paint. Undo steps back one stroke.
  3. Blur is a soft cover. Mosaic is harder to reverse by eye. A solid block is the surest cover for a short number.
  4. Tick "Apply outside the paint" when it is easier to paint the part you want to keep, such as a product, and blur everything else.

Limits

This is a visual cover, not a redaction of a PDF text layer. For a PDF, use Redact PDF, and remember that a black box there still may not delete the text underneath. Someone with the original file still has the original. A very light blur on large type can still be guessed. Use a solid block or a coarse mosaic for IDs and account numbers.

Covering pixels does not delete a location tag. Use EXIF Viewer for that. A logo or a copyright line is a different job: Add Watermark. There is no automatic face finder. Automatic detection misses side faces and finds the wrong things. Painting is slower and more accurate.

Questions

Can someone un-blur the download?

Not back to the original pixels. A weak blur on big letters can still be read. Increase the radius, or switch to mosaic or a solid block.

Why is the download smaller than my camera file?

Editing a 12 megapixel photo with a live brush would stall the tab. The working copy is capped at a 2,000 pixel long side.

Is the original still inside the download?

No. The covered pixels are replaced. Anyone who only has the download cannot turn the blur off. Anyone who still has your first file still has the uncovered photo.

The brush feels offset on a phone.

The paint uses the position inside the preview, including after the picture is scaled to fit. If a finger drag starts on the page instead of the picture, the stroke is ignored. Start the stroke on the photo.

Is the photo uploaded?

No.
