Word to PDF

DOCX only, not old .doc. Paragraphs, bold, and italic are kept. Tables, images, headers, footers, and the original layout are not. Latin text, including accents such as é, usually works. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and many symbols become question marks because the built-in PDF font cannot draw them. Limit: 80 pages. Nothing is uploaded.

Choose a .docx file. Old .doc files need to be saved as .docx first.

Make a straightforward PDF from the paragraphs in a Word file, on this device. It is the right tool for a letter or notes. It is the wrong tool for a designed brochure.

How to use

  1. In Word, if the file is .doc, use Save As and choose Word Document (.docx). This page will not open the old format.
  2. Drop the .docx. If the file has tables or pictures, the status line says they were skipped or flattened.
  3. Create the PDF. If some characters became ?, they were outside the standard Helvetica character set.

How the PDF is built

The document is unzipped in the browser and the paragraph text is read from word/document.xml. Bold and italic runs use Helvetica Bold and Helvetica Oblique. Page breaks in the document start a new PDF page. The page size is US Letter with a plain margin.

A table becomes a series of paragraphs, not a grid. Images are ignored. Text inside some text boxes and SmartArt is missed because it is not a normal paragraph.

There is no font upload. If you need the original fonts and layout, use Word's own Save as PDF. This tool is for private, simple conversion when you do not want to send the file to a server.

Questions

Why did my Chinese text turn into question marks?

The PDF font built into the browser library is Helvetica, which covers Western European letters. It has no glyphs for CJK. The count of replaced characters is shown after conversion. The DOCX itself is not modified.

Can I convert Google Docs?

Download the Doc as .docx from Google, then drop that file. A share link is not a document this page can read.

Does it keep my headers and page numbers?

No. Those live outside the main paragraph stream and are not copied.
